Finding a Camp Site

During the peak season (December to early March) we highly recommend that you book well in advance to get a good spot, as popular destinations, near the beach or lakeside fill up extremely fast. However campgrounds in remote areas, do not offer the option to reserve a site, they operate on a “first come, first serve” basis.

Free Camping

Free Camping is permitted in some areas. Regional local government agencies regulate camping restrictions, so we recommend checking with the nearest visitor information Centre first. There are places that have signs that have strictly no camping.

What to take

Your campervan will come fully equipped with all of your day to day living equipment, but below are a few ideas that will definitely come in handy!

Camping with Children

Games! Cards, Puzzles, Books. Children can get restless on those long drives or rainy days, so make sure you have a few games for them to keep them entertained. Paper and pens are a great idea, as they can draw pictures of there memorable journey to take home with them, from the Iced Capped Mountains to the beautiful beaches, there is so much to see and take in, a picture from your child and their memory can often be better than a photo itself!

NZ Driving Regulations and Tips

Always keep to the left, and when turning left, give way to traffic crossing or approaching from your right.

The speed limit on the open road is 100kph, and 50kph in built up residential areas, unless otherwise marked.

The driver and the occupants need to wear a seatbelt at all times. Motorhomes and caravans can have significant windage, so take special care when cornering.

Winding roads, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow your journey, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are about 200 – 300km.

If you are driving or staying in remote areas, make sure your gas canister and petrol tank are full.
